William Monk wakes up in a hospital. He has completely lost his memories but learns he is a police detective (a Peeler) in Victorian London. Once he recovers from his accident, he is put on a murder case. He is still relearning about himself while he investigates the murder of a Crimean War veteran, brother to a lord, who was beaten to death in his rooms.I love the work of C.S. Harris, so I was very happy when a friend who I had recommended her books to in return shared Ms. Perry's books. This is a great historical mystery. The writing is excellent, very descriptive of Victorian England and the impact of the Crimean War on the population. The police procedural is good too. Monk and his new assistant Evan are methodical. They run down every lead despite Monk only slowly getting his own memories back which hampers his speaking with contacts and his superiors.
Hester Latterly is a lady who went with Florence Nightingale to nurse in the Crimea. She becomes involved in the investigation though she and Monk clash. They're both highly intelligent and independent people, and I enjoyed their conversations as well as Hester's outlook on her situation.
I'm now addicted to these books and I'm very happy that this is just the first one of Ms. Perry's wide catalog. They will definitely keep me busy until the next C.S. Harris book comes out.

This introduction to the William Monk series was better than I expected. The protagonist, a detective on the London police force, has amnesia after an episode of physical and psychological trauma. Amnesia is disastrous for anyone, but author Anne Perry spins a great story of how devastating this is for a detective in the midst of trying to solve several cases. There is a quite a bit of mulling over self-doubts and confusion, which could have been edited a wee bit, but it's forgivable because it really helps us discover Monk's character. Lots of historical detail and wonderful time period touches that make it all quite real. I stayed up late one night finishing it.
If you haven't read any of Anne Perry's William Monk series, I urge you to start with this one, her first.
William Monk is a London police detective. But he's in a hanson cab, and the cabbie is chasing someone for him. Then, there is a terrible accident. The cab hits a curb and tumbles, killing the cabbie and critically injuring Monk. When he regains consciousness, he's in a hospital, and cannot remember anything, except his name. He must pull himself together, and return to work. Yet, he dares not tell even his fellow law enforcers that his memory of events is lost. Conversations, and various incidents bring him to believe that he wasn't a kind person. Cold and self-serving comes to mind for me.
I read this book years ago, and recently read it again to discover Ms. Perry's brilliant descriptions of the times, and how she pulls the reader into Victorian England, just after the Crimean War. I believe you'll have trouble putting this book aside.
I had the pleasure of listening to Anne Perry speak at my university during a reading series, and was very much captured by her dry wit and sharp intelligence. She spoke at length on her writing process and some of the material she was working on, and I was very intrigued by it all, so I decided I would need to pick up the first in her arguably most well known series, the William Monk novels. Throughout reading "The Face of a Stranger" I was gripped and never disappointed, albeit very surprised in certain choices that Perry made as a writer. The novel is almost all told in a third person point of view from two characters, the eponymous William Monk - brilliant amnesiac detective trying to figure out a nasty murder case while also uncovering the secrets of his shrouded past, and Hester Latterly, a highly intelligent, perceptive and strong-willed woman who is simply trying to find her way in the world and figure out what the future has in store for her after a very eventful and prestigious past as a nurse in the Crimea. Monk's sections of the book are reminiscent of the great Victorian and Holmesian mysteries laid out by Doyle and others, while Hester's sections hearken more to a more Romantic period Jane Austen style. I love both, so seeing them blended in what I felt to be a very cohesive style for the purpose of telling a heart-pounding mystery was awesome to see. I would easily recommend it to lovers of romance, and especially to people who love mystery novels and even thrillers. Perry does a great job of putting in a little something for everyone it seems, and her skill as a writer really shows here. Definitely check out this book! If you aren't a fan of Victorian or Romantic literature, perhaps look for something a little more contemporary, but giving the book a chance won't disappoint you!
This started out wonderfully, with what I thought would be very compelling characters. It got tedious and the characters never developed properly. I suspect the character development already happened in the earlier books, but a sequel should not feel so stale. The mystery was contrived, so discovering the 'culprit's' motive was just not believable. The final resolution was disappointing, not to mention unrealistic.
William Monk looks in the mirror, and doesn't know the man looking back.
Unfortunately for him, Monk doesn't have the luxury of taking time to recover from the horrible injury that took his memory. He's with the London police and his position is precarious, his superior can't wait to see him gone.
I won't recap the plot as many have done it before me. I was struck by the many layers of Monk's personality, as they peeled away to reveal a gifted investigator with pretentious to a higher social status than that to which he was born. We also see his reaction to the fact that he has few friends, and even fewer peers who wish him well.
This character-driven mystery moves along steadily, coming to an emotional, slightly rushed climax and end. I keep wondering how I've gone so long without reading the very excellent Anne Perry!
