A great romance story set in historical times. The characters were well rounded and the story line was captivating. A very enjoyable read. Not too risque but enough to catch interest.Product details

Thanks to volunteer transcribers, this book is available free of charge for you . What a bargain!
My only complaint is that the author seemed to think that foreshadowing was a great writing mechanism...drove me crazy. Otherwise, this was a fun story that kept me enchanted through a rainy holiday weekend.
A good story but it seemed to.me that the main players went to great lengths to maintain their beliefs. Dermott's unraveling of secrets seems a bit farfetched but all came together for the good in the end.
Francis Ravenel is your typical rich playboy. He treats women as playthings and doesn't care where the money comes from. On a trip to the family plantation in North Carolina, Francis first meets a charasmatic - perhaps TOO charasmatic - Irishman by the name of Dermott McDermott. (A man so nice they named him twice!) He also meets the beautiful Katrine Dulany, daughter of the plantation's very drunk overseer. Francis and Katrine have a summer romance, yet he can never forget he's landed gentry while she's nothing but a servant's daughter. He drops her like a hot Irish potato. But he still has feelings for her and secretly arranges for Katrine to travel to Paris so she can study singing under the masterful teachings of Josef. (He was only nice enough to be named once.) Meanwhile, Dermott discovers a rather moldy skeleton in the closet of the Ravenel Family, a skeleton powerful enough to destroy everything Francis holds dear. Independently, Katrine also figures out this family secret. She's a smart cookie; I like her. Katrine still has feelings for Francis and is determined to find a way to protect him from the harmful shame.
Will Francis ever grow up to be a real man with responsibilty and depth? Will Katrine's debut on the stage be a success or a disaster? Will Dermott McDermott use his knowledge to take away the Ravenel fortune? Or will Katrine convince him to do the right thing? Will Francis be able to win back Katrine's love? Does she want to be won back, or will she choose the stage? Shall I tell you the deep dark secret and spoil the whole thing?
Naah, you'll just have to read the book.
